From a dream to a thriving bakery
Our story began in July 2016, a bold leap by Rick Nelson who traded a well-paid banking career to follow his passion for baking. He opened a tiny shop at 8 Scotland Street, Bundaberg East – a place known for flooding, yet it became the cherished starting point for The Pocket Storehouse. Soon, his wife Susan, a registered nurse became the next baker bringing her love for home baking and styling organic cakes with her own home grown spray free edible flowers and last but not least we needed exceptional coffee , completing our family business.
A legacy reborn
As our popularity grew, we needed more space. In April 2023, The Pocket Storehouse relocated to the historic Mexican Border Restaurant site at 27 Elliott Heads Road, Kepnock, Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia. What we discovered was remarkable: our new home had been a sourdough bakery over 100 years ago! You can still see the original foundations. Today, we proudly uphold that legacy, crafting 100% authentic sourdough and offering 7 low FODMAP certified baked goods – the only bakery in Australia to do so, certified by Monash University.
